Henry springs his trap

Super Juniors M’s Henry Lau, who was born and raised in Canada, knows a lot about music. Apart from being great at singing, dancing and composing, the 23-year-old star can play the violin, piano and drums. The multi-talented performer is also multilingual, since he can speak English, Mandarin and Korean fluently.
In 2006, Henry joined SM Entertainment after auditioning in Toronto. He then became a member of Super Junior M, who released their debut album, Me, in 2008. Henry has written many songs for the group, including “Go” and “It’s You” from their latest album, Break Down.
This year, Henry has been busy surprising fans with his cooking skills on the TV show, Master Chef Korea Celebrity. In May, Henry released his debut solo album, Trap, the title track of which features Super Junior’s Kyuhyun and Shinee’s Taemin.
To promote Trap, Henry chatted with the Thai press on August 2, a day before he performed with Super Junior at their Super Show 5 concert in Bangkok. SW was on hand to hear what Henry had to say.

Question: Can you tell us about the concept behind your album?

Henry: The album features six tracks, and the style is upbeat pop music. All the songs represent parts of me. On the album cover, there are paintings all over my body.

Question: How did you come up with the idea for the body paintings?

Henry: I wanted to do something different. Every part of the painting on my body represents something. I included my fan club name, String, and the year I was born, 1989. I also wrote Noize Bank, which is my production team. On my back, there’s Korean writing about a new beginning, which refers to my first visit to Korea.

Question: What are the main differences between working with group and as a solo artist?

Henry: When I’m with the group, I just have to do my part. But as a solo singer, I have to do everything from beginning to end. I do it alone and sometimes feel lonely. I also have to talk a lot more and think of smart answers during interviews!

Question: Did you do anything special to prepare for the making of Trap?

Henry: I just kept working hard. I sang and ran every day for months.

Question: What was it like working with Taemin and Kyuhyun on “Trap”?

Henry: I’m very lucky to have collaborated with them. They were nice and they helped me a lot. I once had to perform with Kyuhyun on a music programme at 5.30 pm, but his plane from China didn’t arrive until 5 pm. I saw pictures of him running from the airport, which were very funny!

Question: What are your expectations for Trap?

Henry: I hope that people to think of me as a real musician, rather than just as somebody who sings and dances. I might not look serious, but I’m very serious about my music.

Question: Do you have any tips for becoming multilingual?

Henry: When you learn different languages, the important thing initially is pronunciation. After that, you can pay attention to learning words, sentences and grammar.

Question: If you had to choose only one musical instrument to play, what would it be?

Henry: I’d choose my voice because I can use it wherever I go.

Question: What is your general impression of Thai people?

Henry: Thai people are friendly. I can easily communicate and get close to Thai people. They’re also very funny. Press conferences are usually formal and serious, but in Thailand they’re casual and fun. I like that. Thailand is one of my favourite countries.

Question: What are your future plans?

Henry: I will work on more music projects. There’ll be a lot more work from me. I also believe that when I retire, I’ll consider living in Thailand. I think it’s a great and relaxing place.

Question: Do you have any special message for your Thai fans?

Henry: ’m always happy to be here. It was touching to see fans at the airport with posters and pictures of me. I hope I can come back here often. Thank you for your great support. I won’t forget you guys!
